Which original Dragonball episodes are important to watch before watching Dragonball Z?

I certainly want to watch everything starting from the Tien Shinhan Saga, but is all the stuff before that relevant to the main plot or maybe just important, like the Red Ribbon army saga and General Blue saga etc?
